Frequently Asked Questions

What are the next steps after registration closes?

After registration closes there is a two-day change/cancel window. During this window you can move

divisions (up in weight or down in age for Masters). A common reason for moving division is that a

competitor is alone in their bracket. You can also cancel for a full refund during this window. No changes,

cancels, or refunds after the deadline which is specified on the Smoothcomp event page. You can change

or cancel yourself using Smoothcomp. Here is an article explaining how to do it:

What if I am alone in my division?

If you are alone in your division, you can move to a division with other competitors (up in weight or down

in age for masters if available). You can check to see if other competitors are in your division on theSmoothcomp event page. If there is nowhere to move, you can cancel for a full refund BEFORE the

change/cancel deadline which is specified on the Smoothcomp event page.

When are brackets released?

Brackets are typically released the Thursday before the tournament. We communicate the bracket

release via email and our social media channels. Brackets and schedule can be viewed on the

Smoothcomp event page.

What are the uniform requirements?

The WSJJF follows the pre-2024 IBJJF uniform requirements. The IBJJF implemented a few additional

requirements for the 2024 world championships that we will not be requiring. The uniform requirements

that the WSJJF will be requiring can be found here: https://ibjjf.com/uniform

What is the ruleset for the tournament?

At World Star Jiu-Jitsu Federation (WSJJF), we follow the official IBJJF ruleset, with custom No-Gi divisions to promote safety and progression. Please refer to the rules page here.

What time should I arrive to the venue?

We suggest being at the venue 90 minutes before your first match. We suggest being near the bullpen

area approximately 30 minutes before your first match. Once you see you name in the upcoming

matches on the television screens you can proceed to checkin with the gi checker and weigh-in table.

Where can I buy spectator tickets?

Spectator tickets can be purchased at the door on event day or online ahead of the event. We publish the

online ticket purchase link via our social media and via email when brackets are released.

Is there a preschedule before brackets are released?

The schedule varies from event to event due to a number of factors but we are often asked for a rough

schedule for family planning purposes. Our schedule is typically structured as follows:

– The events run roughly from 9am to 6pm.

– Kids in the morning with white belts first youngest to oldest followed by colored belts

youngest to olds. Kids divisions usually finish around 1pm or so.

– The afternoon session is juvenile and adult divisions. We start with juvenile blue belts

and then run adult and masters belts in the following order youngest to oldest: black, blue,

purple, brown, and white

When can I weigh in?

In the morning once doors open at the venue.

What if I miss weight?

For kids competitors if you miss weight, you will not be able to compete in the normal bracket. In order to

keep it fair for all competitors there is a zero-tolerance policy for missed weight.

For kids we do offer an exhibition mat. Exhibitions matches do not count towards team point or medals.

However, we do offer this perk to get kids some additional experience. If a kids competitor misses weight you can proceed to the exhibition mat to try and get an exhibition.

For adult competitors if you miss weight, you will not be able to compete and there are no refunds for

missed weight. Please ensure you are registered for the appropriate weight class prior to event day.

What if my child loses their first match? (exhibition mat)

We run one mat for exhibitions as we always try to get the kids at least 2 matches (one in their division

and one exhibition). Kids wanting additional matches will go to the exhibition check in table and provide

age/belt/weight. We try to find matchups as close in age/belt/weight as possible.

However, there is no guarantee as it depends what kids want exhibitions and what matchups are accepted. These exhibitions do not count towards team points or medals.

Can I compete in the open weight?

Open weight division are available to juvenile, adult, and masters colored belt competitors. You have to

place in your division in order to register for the open weight. Masters competitors can only compete in

the open weight division in the age of your weight bracket.
